TREE FARM SYSTEM MAINTAINS
PEFC CERTIFICATION

International certification recognized American Tree Farms as certified providers of sustainable wood products in 2009

Family forest owners who are members of the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) automatically enjoy the benefit of third party certification since ATFS is recognized by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC).

PEFC is an international, independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification.

As part of the PEFC certification, Tree Farms across the country are audited annually based on a computer sampling. Each region of the United States has a number of PEFC audits to complete annually. One state in each region is selected to be audited on a random basis. North Carolina was selected for the first round of PEFC audits back in 2010. These PEFC audits are in addition to the required inspection that each state is asked to complete annually.
