SUMMARY:Birding Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join the NC Wildlife Resources Commission at Singletary Lake State Park as we discover a variety of bird species migrating into the pines and herbaceous habitats surrounding Elizabethtown. Fall migration is a beautiful spectacle to behold and a great time to learn warblers! We will explore the conservation challenges that face resident birds and migrants alike. Hands-on field experience will improve your birding skills as we learn identification tricks\, songs\, and behavioral cues together. All levels of experience are welcome! \nParticipants are eligible for 3 hours of Criteria II or III credit towards the NC OEE Environmental Education Certification\, and school teachers receive 0.3 CEU credits. \nThis workshop will be entirely outdoors and we will still bird in a drizzle. Please wear closed-toed comfortable shoes\, bring water and bug spray\, as well as some sort of sun protection. Binoculars and field guides are encouraged and there will be a few pairs of binoculars participants can borrow. \nFor more information and to register please call the park office at 910-669-2928 or by email at singletary.lake@ncparks.gov. \nFree lodging available for registered participants.

SUMMARY:Bats
DESCRIPTION:Join the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to learn about bat biology\, behavior\, conservation needs\, and the ecological services bats provide for the rest of us. We will simulate bat biologists as we mist net (fake) bats and determine the species\, individuals affected by disease\, and discover new characteristics of each bat species present on the coast. We will play some games to learn about bat migration and conservation concerns\, followed by a hike at sunset to track bats with acoustic devices\, reading their frequencies on a monitor as they forage overhead. \nThis event is family friendly. Free lodging available for registered participants. \nFor more information and to register please call the park office at 910-669-2928 or by email at singletary.lake@ncparks.gov.
