SUMMARY:Pine Straw Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Pine straw is extremely popular as a mulch in the southeastern United States\, and because of this pine straw harvesting is a strong industry in the region. Longleaf pine straw is the most desirable of the southern pines\nbecause of its long and durable needles\, but slash and loblolly pine straw can also be used. \nRaking pine straw can be an attractive and valuable source of income for forest landowners\, providing an opportunity to cover some of the costs associated with establishment and maintenance associated with longleaf\npine ecosystems. Commercial operators bale pine straw and sell it to contractors and garden centers who\, in turn\, sell it to homeowners. \nThe purpose of this webinar is to help landowners and resource managers balance harvesting operations while preserving desired wildlife benefits and stand health. While pine straw is valuable to homeowners as a mulch\, pine\nneedles are also valuable to the forest\, serving critical ecological functions\, including helping to carry prescribed fires as a fine fuel\, protecting soil and water resources\, and recycling nutrients. \nThis webinar will take place on a series of 4 Wednesdays – September 16\, 23\, 30 and October 7. \nCost is $10 general admission and $45 for foresters who need CFEs. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Monarch Biology and Conservation in the Southeast
DESCRIPTION:In this first webinar in a three part series focused on monarchs in the southeast\, NRCS planners and community conservationists will learn about monarch biology basics (food requirements\, other habitat factors\, natural enemies\, migration\, etc.)\, their phenology (when to find them in the southeast)\, their status (how monarchs populations are doing) and what we know about habitats that best support them regionally. This webinar will briefly highlight how diverse NRCS practices can support monarchs and other wildlife (Part 3 in December will include a deeper look at resources for NRCS planners c/o http://nrcs.usda.gov/monarchs.) Part 2 (in November) will focus more on specific habitat needs of larvae and adults\, including details on host and nectar plants and their ecology. We’ll also briefly consider threats facing breeding and migrating monarchs and will review recent research on threats posed by various pesticides to monarchs. Part 3 (in December) is aimed primarily at NRCS planners\, covering the Monarch Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Guides and habitat creation and management using Farm Bill Programs. \nPre-registration is not required. Join the webinar here.
