DESCRIPTION:Dr. Yanshu Li (Associate Professor and Forest Economics and Taxation Outreach Specialist – University of Georgia) will give an overview of timber taxes including tax considerations of natural disaster related timber damage and recovery efforts. \nTimber taxes encompass the federal and state tax rules that apply when you own\, manage\, or sell timber or timberland. Understanding both the forestry specific provisions and the general tax rules that affect your management activities can significantly reduce your overall tax liability through strategic planning. But tax planning becomes even more critical when a natural disaster strikes. Storms\, wildfires\, and other catastrophic events can damage or destroy timber\, and the tax implications of that loss can be complex. In this webinar\, Dr. Yanshu Li will provide an overview of timber taxation\, with a special focus on how natural disaster related timber damage\, losses\, and recovery efforts are treated under current tax law.

The frosted elfin is a small\, non-migratory butterfly that is seeing significant decline across most of its range. In this presentation\, you will learn about key ecological aspects of this curious butterfly as well as current efforts underway to combat population loss. DESCRIPTION:Hardwood tree species are widely distributed across the southeastern United States and provide significant economic and ecological benefits. Hardwood forests support wildlife habitat\, contribute to food resources\, nutrient cycling\, offer recreational opportunities\, and supply valuable timber. However\, many hardwood species are susceptible to diseases that produce symptomatic leaves such as bacterial leaf scorch\, anthracnose\, and others that can reduce aesthetic value and overall tree health. Accurate identification of these diseases is essential for effective management. In this webinar\, Dr. Ellen Crocker\, associate professor at the University of Kentucky\, will discuss the biology\, symptoms\, impacts\, and management strategies for several common hardwood tree diseases with foliar symptoms.

SUMMARY:N.C. Tree Farm Program Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the N.C. Tree Farm Program’s 2026 Annual Meeting on May 16 at Bayfields in White Oak\, N.C. The event will include a field tour focused on wetland and longleaf pine restoration\, creation of bobwhite quail habitat\, prescribed burning and Carolina Bays. The program will also include presentation of volunteer and Tree Farmer awards. \nBayfields is a 4\,000-acre Tree Farm that supports sustainable timber management\, recreational hunting\, pine straw production and habitat enhancement for rare and non-rare plant and animal species. Located in Bladen County\, Bayfields has ecologically significant longleaf pine and wetland habitats within a larger landscape of natural forest\, pocosin and managed timber. The property contributes to a network of federal\, state and private conservation lands in northern Bladen County with a 1\,770-acre conservation easement donated to The Nature Conservancy in 2007. \nThe current family owners have refocused management efforts toward habitat conservation and restoration. They are restoring upland old field loblolly pine and slash pine plantations back to longleaf pine stands that more closely approximate the structure and composition of the natural longleaf pine stands that once occupied the sites.
