DESCRIPTION:In the fall\, Coastal North Carolina is home to many species of birds that are here year-round\, as well as species that migrate through this area on their way back to their wintering grounds further south. This workshop will consist of a hike through various habitats to identify these migrants\, as well as resident birds. \nThis workshop will satisfy requirements for Criteria II of the NC OEE Environmental Education Certification. This event will be held entirely outdoors with hiking over various terrain. DESCRIPTION:Explore the lives of monarch butterflies and learn how you can help them and other pollinators in your own garden through demonstrations\, resource materials\, and a walk through a butterfly garden. If we are lucky\, there will be adult monarchs to tag\, in order to study and track their migration. DESCRIPTION:Chatham County Agriculture Agent Debbie Roos will be giving a tour of Chatham County Cooperative Extension’s Pollinator Paradise Demonstration Garden at Chatham Mills in Pittsboro on Saturday October 5\, 2019 at 2:00 pm. The garden features over 215 species of perennials\, trees\, shrubs\, vines\, and grasses\, and 85% of them are native to North Carolina. This is a great opportunity to visit the popular gathering spot for honey bees\, native bees\, butterflies\, hummingbirds\, and other beneficial insects in addition to their human admirers! DESCRIPTION:Explore the fascinating world of fungi during a walk in the woods on October 12th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Lower Haw River State Natural Area (Near the Haw River between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro).  Fungi include yeasts\, rusts\, smuts\, mildews\, molds\, and mushrooms.  Fungi are everywhere\, helping to break down organic matter.  Learn more about the fungus among us! SUMMARY:Birding Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join the NC Wildlife Resources Commission at Singletary Lake State Park as we discover a variety of bird species migrating into the pines and herbaceous habitats surrounding Elizabethtown. Fall migration is a beautiful spectacle to behold and a great time to learn warblers! We will explore the conservation challenges that face resident birds and migrants alike. Hands-on field experience will improve your birding skills as we learn identification tricks\, songs\, and behavioral cues together. All levels of experience are welcome!  \nParticipants are eligible for 3 hours of Criteria II or III credit towards the NC OEE Environmental Education Certification\, and school teachers receive 0.3 CEU credits. \nThis workshop will be entirely outdoors and we will still bird in a drizzle. Please wear closed-toed comfortable shoes\, bring water and bug spray\, as well as some sort of sun protection.
