DESCRIPTION:Come join the NC Wildlife Resources Commission at Singletary Lake State Park as we discover a variety of bird species migrating into the pines and herbaceous habitats surrounding Elizabethtown. Fall migration is a beautiful spectacle to behold and a great time to learn warblers! We will explore the conservation challenges that face resident birds and migrants alike. Hands-on field experience will improve your birding skills as we learn identification tricks\, songs\, and behavioral cues together. All levels of experience are welcome!  \nParticipants are eligible for 3 hours of Criteria II or III credit towards the NC OEE Environmental Education Certification\, and school teachers receive 0.3 CEU credits. \nThis workshop will be entirely outdoors and we will still bird in a drizzle. DESCRIPTION:Chatham County Agriculture Agent Debbie Roos will be giving a tour of Chatham County Cooperative Extension’s Pollinator Paradise Demonstration Garden at Chatham Mills in Pittsboro on Wednesday October 16\, 2019 at 5:00 pm. The garden features over 215 species of perennials\, trees\, shrubs\, vines\, and grasses\, and 85% of them are native to North Carolina. This is a great opportunity to visit the popular gathering spot for honey bees\, native bees\, butterflies\, hummingbirds\, and other beneficial insects in addition to their human admirers! No registration is required…just meet on the lawn in front of Chatham Marketplace\, rain or shine! The garden is at 480 Hillsboro St. Pittsboro\, NC 27312. SUMMARY:Bats
DESCRIPTION:Join the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to learn about bat biology\, behavior\, conservation needs\, and the ecological services bats provide for the rest of us. We will simulate bat biologists as we mist net (fake) bats and determine the species\, individuals affected by disease\, and discover new characteristics of each bat species present on the coast.  We will play some games to learn about bat migration and conservation concerns\, followed by a hike at sunset to track bats with acoustic devices\, reading their frequencies on a monitor as they forage overhead. \nThis event is family friendly. SUMMARY:N.C. Tree Farm Program Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The N.C. Tree Farm Program will hold it’s 2019 Annual Meeting on Oct. 17 at Jordan Lumber Company in Mt. Gilead. We’ll tour Jordan’s state-of-the art sawmill while it’s in operation and learn about the sustainable forest management practices on the company’s 73\,000 acres of timberland that have led to a 200% increase in yield per acre of the past 20 years. After the mill and woods tours\, we’ll enjoy lunch together and celebrate the accomplishments of our Tree Farmers and volunteers. We’ll recognize Tree Farm anniversaries\, and name the Inspector of the Year and Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year. \nRegister by October 7.\nItinerary\n\n8 a.m.  Registration Opens\n8:30   Overview of Jordan Lumber Company and Timberlands\n9:30   Sawmill Tour\nJordan Lumber Company’s Mt. Gilead facility is the largest single-site Southern yellow pine sawmill in the country. This state-of-the-art facility produces more than 1 million board feet per shift.\n11:45   Forestry Tour\nJordan manages its timberlands primarily to supplement the wood supply for its Mt. Gilead sawmills. Their goal is to grow quality pine sawtimber in a reasonable rotation length and in an environmentally responsible manner. SUMMARY:Autumn Brilliance Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:There will be demonstrations on Photoshop techniques\, close-up techniques\, and wildlife photography.  And\, of course\, the concluding critique session of work completed during the workshop. In addition to the presentations and demonstrations\, there will be an emphasis on photographing in the field\, one-on-one interactions with instructors\, free-time for those who want to do some work on their own\, and an optional photographic trip to Cades Cove.  The workshop is designed for all levels of expertise\, from serious beginners and beyond. Program lasts from Friday afternoon to Monday mid-morning.  \nUnlike many photography workshops\, this price includes meals\, lodging and instruction by one of the finest teams of photography instructors anywhere in the country.  Combine that with the location inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park and it is a real steal.

SUMMARY:Naval Stores Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Jones Lake State Park as we share our deep interest in the turpentine industry and raise public awareness of the past and its influence on the present.  We will explore the naval store industry from the longleaf pine forest to the sailing vessels that consumed our once majestic longleaf pine ecosystem.  We will also be taking a hayride to see old and true remanences of the industry that put North Carolina on the map.  There will also be demonstrations in which we will be making real tar\, pitch and turpentine.  Guaranteed to be a day full of adventure and education. SUMMARY:Wild Mushroom Certification
DESCRIPTION:Wild Mushroom Safety & Identification Certification students who successfully complete this two-day class will be eligible for a 5-year permit enabling them to forage and sell wild mushrooms. The mushroom foraging permit meets the criteria required by the health department in North Carolina\, South Carolina\, Georgia\, Virginia\, New York\, and New Jersey. Stesha Warren of Eliana’s Garden\, LLC has over 20 years foraging experience and is the instructor for this class\, teaching the renowned course developed by Mushroom Mountain\, LLC\, a mushroom cultivation and research facility located in Easley\, SC. \nThis two day class is held at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth\, NC. Bishopric Building Room 108. We will spend a great deal of time taking a in depth look into each species approved by NC Dept of Health. As time allows we will also spend time in the beautiful forests and trails located on RCC campus identifying wild mushrooms. \nStudents should come prepared to take notes. Please also come prepared to be in the forest with attire appropriate for the weather\, bug spray\, identification key book\, harvest knife\, and basket or paper bag. \n  \n**This class qualifies for criteria III and criteria IV credit for the NC Environmental Education Certification program.
