DESCRIPTION:Grab your flashlight and join Ranger Jane Dauster for a cool fall evening at DuPont in search of owls.   Program will meet at the Guion Farm Parking Area in DuPont State Recreational Forest (3045 Sky Valley Road\, Hendersonville\, NC  28739) where we will enjoy a brief slide show on our local owl species.  We will then be staged at the Guion Farm Shelter and try our luck at calling in an owl or two using a recording\, in hopes of getting a reply.  Suitable for family audiences but young participants must be able to sit quietly and listen for owls!  Bring a flashlight and adequate clothing layers for cooler weather.  Event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.   \nSign-up is required by calling Holmes Educational State Forest at 828-692-0100 or email holmesesf.ncfs@ncagr.gov.

Wildlife Resources Commission provides free hunter education courses throughout the year in every county.  More than a firearm safety course\, instruction includes ethics and responsibility\, conservation and wildlife management\, wildlife identification\, survival and first aid\, specialty hunting and tree stand safety. \nThere are no minimum age requirements\, however\, classes are taught at a sixth grade level and tests must be completed without assistance. Courses are a minimum of 6 hours\, taught by wildlife officers\, hunter education specialists and certified volunteer instructors\, and certification is accepted in every state and province in North America. \nDue to hunter education\, hunting accidents have decreased by over 50% during the last twenty years making hunting one of the safest recreational activities. \nHunter Education Courses are offered at different locations throughout the month. SUMMARY:Beginning fly-tying Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This Fly-tying Course is designed to provide the student with a basic knowledge of fly tying tools\, materials\, patterns\, and tying techniques.  We teach the course in progression beginning with simple fly patterns and steadily advance toward more complex flies allowing the students to build on their skills. In this course\, students will complete 6 fly patterns over approximately 8 hours of instruction. \n  \nIn order to assure that each student receives proper instruction\, this course is limited to 25 participants. All tools and materials are provided. In addition\, participants will receive a Fly-tying Handbook that provides them with reference to the patterns tied in class. \n  \nThis course is suitable for ages 12 years old and older. However\, participants 12 -15 years old must be accompanied by an adult. \nThis course will take place in 3 consecutive evening portions to cover all the learning materials and finish each of the 6 patterns.

DESCRIPTION:Come join Rick Stoner on a winter hike adventure to identify common plant species during the cold winter season. Even in the winter there are many plants with leaves by which we can identify them\, but we can also identify trees and plants by bark\, winter twigs\, and various growth characteristics. On our Winter Walk In The Woods we’ll learn to identify a number of trees and plants as well as discuss many interesting facts about them.  This will be a 2 mile hike. All participants must be prepared for cold temperatures and a strenuous hike. Bring food and water.
