SUMMARY:Planting Design for Wildlife: A Landscape Architect’s Guide to Supporting Wildlife Through Intentional Planting
DESCRIPTION:Join N.C. Wildlife Federation South Wake Conservationists Chapter for a webinar exploring how intentional planting design can support wildlife while meeting human needs. Presented by registered landscape architect Sara Donohoe\, this webinar focuses on integrating ecological function into planting design through creative and practical strategies. \nWith expertise in native and habitat-based planting design\, Sara will demonstrate how techniques like site analysis\, plant layering\, and color blocking can be used to create vibrant\, resilient landscapes. Participants will learn how thoughtful plant selection and spatial organization can provide critical resources for pollinators\, birds\, and other wildlife—all while enhancing the visual appeal and usability of a space. \nThis webinar is designed not only for landscape architects and designers\, but also for gardeners\, conservationists\, and wildlife advocates interested in creating more ecologically supportive landscapes at any scale. Whether you’re designing a park or planting a backyard garden\, this session offers practical tools and inspiring insights to help elevate the ecological impact of your work—while staying rooted in design excellence.

SUMMARY:Storm to Stove: A Workshop for Timber and Firewood Processing After Hurricane Helene
DESCRIPTION:Though Hurricane Helene imposed widescale destruction on the mountains of North Carolina\, opportunities are available to make the most out of the devastation. Two options you can pursue are to generate firewood and sawtimber. This two-day technical workshop at the Hinton Center in Hayesville will cover best practices for processing storm-damaged timber into firewood and other wood products. Experts will present on post-storm timber recovery\, chainsaw safety\, wood extraction methods\, sawmilling\, firewood production\, drying\, storage and safety. Hands-on demonstrations and technical discussions will provide practical insights into equipment\, safety protocols and efficiency in wood utilization—from storm to stove. Whether you’re a landowner\, forester or firewood professional\, this workshop offers essential knowledge for maximizing wood resources.

SUMMARY:Birds in Forested Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Forested wetlands exist in two main ways – those that contain still water\, and those where waters flow through. And in some cases\, a forest may experience both during a given year. In this presentation\, John A. Gerwin\, Research Scientist and Educator of Ornithology\, will showcase the natural histories of some of the avian denizens that occur in these forests. He will also discuss some of the research he and his former students conducted along the Great Pee Dee and Roanoke rivers\, with Swainson’s and Prothonotary warblers among others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Hemlock Hike at Gorges State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join state park staff as they hike along one of the Hemlock Conservation Areas in the beautiful Gorges State Park! Learn about the importance of hemlocks\, what is threatening them and what you can do to help. \nThe 2.8 mile (total) out and back hike will explore only a small section of the park\, but includes a dense patch of hemlocks crowded around a tranquil stream before climbing to a ridge that exhibits an entirely different environment than the trail’s streamside beginnings. There are a few steep sections\, but this hike is only of moderate difficulty as it follows old logging roads and has less than 500 feet of total elevation gain. The hike will start out with exploring the streamside area and its many hemlocks\, diving into details on hemlocks and their conservation then head up the Auger Hole and Heath Pine Ridge trails. \nGorges State Park is located about 5 miles southwest of Rosman\, NC and is near the NC-SC border. \nThe back-up weather date for this hike will be on September 21st at 10:00 a.m.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. Hemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nHemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before. This hands-off demonstration will be useful for landowners\, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options\, and staff will demonstrate the chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands. These methods are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety\, special considerations and guidance for hiring a tree care professional. \n

SUMMARY:"Aldo Leopold and the Land Ethic: The Archival Record and Resources to Dig Deeper into the Making of A Sand County Almanac
DESCRIPTION:While Aldo Leopold’s impact on the conservation movement is broad and deep\, he is best known as the author of the now classic book A Sand County Almanac. Translated into sixteen languages\, it is one of the foundational texts for those around the world who care about people and places. But becoming a classic doesn’t happen overnight; it requires great writing\, and often a few twists of fate. Buddy will introduce Leopold’s writing and publishing journey as well as the online archival resources at the University of Wisconsin and elsewhere available to do your own deep dive into the making of an American classic. \nBuddy Huffaker has served as Executive Director at the Aldo Leopold Foundation since 1999. During his tenure the foundation has grown the Leopold Community by protecting the Leopold Shack & Farm (the inspiration and setting for much of the A Sand County Almanac) as a National Historic Landmark\, constructing the LEED Platinum Aldo Leopold Legacy Center out of trees planted by the Leopold family\, producing the Emmy Award–winning documentary GreenFire\, and supporting ten different foreign translations of A Sand County Almanac. The foundation continues the Leopold family’s commitment to stewardship through the restoration and management of the 4\,400-acre Leopold-Pines Conservation Area and by using this experience to inform and inspire other landowners to adopt and implement their own land ethic.

SUMMARY:An Overview of Timber Taxes webinar
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Yanshu Li (Associate Professor and Forest Economics and Taxation Outreach Specialist – University of Georgia) will give an overview of timber taxes including tax considerations of natural disaster related timber damage and recovery efforts. \nTimber taxes encompass the federal and state tax rules that apply when you own\, manage\, or sell timber or timberland. Understanding both the forestry specific provisions and the general tax rules that affect your management activities can significantly reduce your overall tax liability through strategic planning. But tax planning becomes even more critical when a natural disaster strikes. Storms\, wildfires\, and other catastrophic events can damage or destroy timber\, and the tax implications of that loss can be complex. In this webinar\, Dr. Yanshu Li will provide an overview of timber taxation\, with a special focus on how natural disaster related timber damage\, losses\, and recovery efforts are treated under current tax law.
