SUMMARY:Canoe the Mayo
DESCRIPTION:This canoe float will start at the Anglin Mill access at Old Anglin Mill Loop Road and end at the public boat access on US 220 Business. Participants must provide their own transportation to the launch site and from the take-out site\, which means you will need two vehicles with drivers or someone to pick you at the take-out.  The float should take approximately four to five hours\, depending of river current and water levels. Canoes\, personal flotation devices (to be worn the entire time) and paddles are provided. All participants must wear shoes appropriate for wading. Flip-flops will not be allowed. Bring drinking water\, a snack/picnic lunch\, sunscreen and any personal items in a waterproof container. Dress for and be prepared to get wet. Nylon clothing is best as opposed to jeans or cotton fabrics. \nCall 336-427-2530 to sign up or for more information and directions. Space is limited.

DESCRIPTION:While prescribed fire is an essential land management tool in the Southeast\, its impacts on air quality and public health remain uncertain. This webinar will cover a recent project that used burn permit records\, air quality modelling\, and epidemiological associations between fine particulate matter concentrations and multiple health endpoints to examine these impacts\, with a focus on case studies in Georgia and North Carolina. Results show not only potential health impacts from prescribed fire\, but call for greater attention to the characterization of prescribed fire impacts\, potential air quality benefits of land treatment\, and the communities most exposed to fire-related smoke. SUMMARY:Managing Bottomland Hardwoods
DESCRIPTION:Bottomland Hardwood forests are critically important to conserving ecosystem biodiversity in the Southeast. They provide nature-based solutions for maintaining water quality as well as buffering us from natural disasters that increasingly threaten local communities with inland flooding. Can we successfully consider active habitat restoration and conservation while balancing the economic equation that family forest owners\, consulting foresters\, and small timber markets require? \nNote: This workshop consists of two parts\, a webinar (October 26) and a field tour (October 28 or October 29). Participants may participate in the in-person field tour on either October 28 or 29\, 2021. Tour times are 9-12 or 1-4 PM on both dates. Attendance in the field tour is not required to participate in the webinar. The field tour will take place at Bladen Lakes State Forest near Elizabethtown\, North Carolina. Pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:An Environmental History of the American Chestnut
DESCRIPTION:Before 1910\, the American chestnut was one of the most common trees in the eastern United States. The natural distribution of the American chestnut extended across more than 400\,000 square miles of territory\, contributing to the American chestnut becoming an integral part of American environmental and cultural history. But then a blight fungus introduced during the late nineteenth century rendered the tree “functionally extinct.” Although its eradication caused one of the greatest ecological catastrophes since the last ice age\, sentiment towards the iconic species continued unabated. Over the last several decades\, considerable effort has been expended to try to restore this iconic species to the forest\, but not without controversy.
