SUMMARY:Passenger Pigeons: A Force of Forest Disturbance
DESCRIPTION:Join the Consortium of Appalachian Fire Manager and Scientists to learn how this extinct species impacted forests in the United States. Presentations by Dr. Ian Thompson (Tribal Historic Preservation Officer\, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma) and Dr. Ben Novak (Lead Scientist\, Revive & Restore) will introduce the cultural and ecological significance of passenger pigeons. This webinar will consider what their disappearance means in terms of ecological disturbance processes and the implications for forest and fire management today. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Potential Impacts of Prescribed Fire Smoke on Air Quality\, Public Health and Socially Vulnerable Populations in the Southeastern U.S.
DESCRIPTION:While prescribed fire is an essential land management tool in the Southeast\, its impacts on air quality and public health remain uncertain. This webinar will cover a recent project that used burn permit records\, air quality modelling\, and epidemiological associations between fine particulate matter concentrations and multiple health endpoints to examine these impacts\, with a focus on case studies in Georgia and North Carolina. Results show not only potential health impacts from prescribed fire\, but call for greater attention to the characterization of prescribed fire impacts\, potential air quality benefits of land treatment\, and the communities most exposed to fire-related smoke. Following the presentations there will be time for audience Q/A with the speakers. \nSAF CFE credits expected.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Enterprises on Private Lands
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of establishing wildlife enterprises as recreational businesses. Such businesses benefit wildlife\, forestry\, and natural resources by providing landowners with income to reinvest in habitat and conservation practices. More broadly\, these farm level decisions affect rural communities and income. Webinar topics include types of outdoor experiences for garnering income\, and assisting landowners in deciding whether to invest their time\, energies\, and finances in an enterprise. Legal and liability issues are discussed briefly. An understanding of financial feasibility and marketing can contribute to success. A case study from 3D Duck + Deer Destination owned by Mr. Lacy of Newport\, Arkansas offers insights about how financial factors play into wildlife enterprise decisions on the farm.\n\n\nAdvance Registration is required. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Manipulating Mesopredator Populations to Benefit Native Prey: Exploring Controversies and Potential Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Despite numerous studies evaluating mesocarnivore population reduction as a tool for managing wild prey populations\, there remains mush more controversy associated with efficacy of the practice. This webinar will explore existing data to better understand this controversy. Important questions for determining when predators may limit a population will be discussed. Finally\, the webinar will provided criteria that may be useful for predicting efficacy of predator population manipulations for increasing prey populations. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Managing Bottomland Hardwoods
DESCRIPTION:Bottomland Hardwood forests are critically important to conserving ecosystem biodiversity in the Southeast. They provide nature-based solutions for maintaining water quality as well as buffering us from natural disasters that increasingly threaten local communities with inland flooding. Can we successfully consider active habitat restoration and conservation while balancing the economic equation that family forest owners\, consulting foresters\, and small timber markets require? \nNote: This workshop consists of two parts\, a webinar (October 26) and a field tour (October 28 or October 29). Participants may participate in the in-person field tour on either October 28 or 29\, 2021. Tour times are 9-12 or 1-4 PM on both dates. Attendance in the field tour is not required to participate in the webinar. The field tour will take place at Bladen Lakes State Forest near Elizabethtown\, North Carolina. Pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:An Environmental History of the American Chestnut
DESCRIPTION:Before 1910\, the American chestnut was one of the most common trees in the eastern United States. The natural distribution of the American chestnut extended across more than 400\,000 square miles of territory\, contributing to the American chestnut becoming an integral part of American environmental and cultural history. But then a blight fungus introduced during the late nineteenth century rendered the tree “functionally extinct.” Although its eradication caused one of the greatest ecological catastrophes since the last ice age\, sentiment towards the iconic species continued unabated. Over the last several decades\, considerable effort has been expended to try to restore this iconic species to the forest\, but not without controversy.

SUMMARY:Using Ecological Forestry to Support Bird Management Objectives
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Forest Ecology Working Group (FEWG) and NCTC\, working in collaboration with many FWS programs and partners\, have developed a 12-part monthly lecture series to address the 50-year decline of 3 billion birds through partnerships\, conservation science and forest management. The series tells a compelling story about forest bird population declines\, partnership opportunities\, and forest management actions that can support bird population recovery and sustainability. \nAttendance at all presentations is recommended as each month’s topic builds upon the previous presentation. SUMMARY:Basics of Timber Basis: Re(setting) the Table
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is the second of five in the “Forestry Taxes: Learn\, Plan & Save Money Webinar Series.” What are the basics of timber basis? Join this webinar to learn more about one of the most important financial aspects of timber management that often goes unnoticed or underappreciated. Timber basis is how much you have invested in the timber and it is used to determine net taxable income. It can be applied to reduce taxable income\, minimize inheritance taxes\, and reduce financial losses after a storm\, and more. \nMany forest landowners pay more taxes on their timber than they should. Accountants can help to calculate taxes\, but forest landowners need to understand how timber expenses should be reported\, and how they are taxed. Saving money on timber taxes starts by keeping good records and knowing how tax rules will affect your bill. The Woodland Stewards Regional Extension Program for Landowners was developed by a collaborative team of forestry Extension professionals from eleven different organizations. This is the fourth year of the series and other webinars from the current and past series can be accessed on the Webinar Portal.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunchbox Talk: Naval Stores and the Longleaf Pine Industry in Southeastern NC
DESCRIPTION:In a time before cars\, trains\, and airplanes\, water was often the easiest or the only means of long-distance transportation. Eighteenth-century ships were sailing ships\, and they were made almost entirely of wood.\nNaval stores are goods used in building and maintaining ships. Originally\, ‘naval stores’ included everything used to build a ship meaning tar\, pitch\, and turpentine. All of these products came from pine trees\, and particularly\, the Longleaf pine\, which North Carolina had in abundance. For that reason and others\, North Carolina became a key supplier to the British Navy\, and naval stores became central to the colony’s economy. \n
