SUMMARY:Managing Bottomland Hardwoods
DESCRIPTION:Bottomland Hardwood forests are critically important to conserving ecosystem biodiversity in the Southeast. They provide nature-based solutions for maintaining water quality as well as buffering us from natural disasters that increasingly threaten local communities with inland flooding. Can we successfully consider active habitat restoration and conservation while balancing the economic equation that family forest owners\, consulting foresters\, and small timber markets require? \nNote: This workshop consists of two parts\, a webinar (October 26) and a field tour (October 28 or October 29). Participants may participate in the in-person field tour on either October 28 or 29\, 2021. Tour times are 9-12 or 1-4 PM on both dates. Attendance in the field tour is not required to participate in the webinar. The field tour will take place at Bladen Lakes State Forest near Elizabethtown\, North Carolina. Pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:An Environmental History of the American Chestnut
DESCRIPTION:Before 1910\, the American chestnut was one of the most common trees in the eastern United States. The natural distribution of the American chestnut extended across more than 400\,000 square miles of territory\, contributing to the American chestnut becoming an integral part of American environmental and cultural history. But then a blight fungus introduced during the late nineteenth century rendered the tree “functionally extinct.” Although its eradication caused one of the greatest ecological catastrophes since the last ice age\, sentiment towards the iconic species continued unabated. Over the last several decades\, considerable effort has been expended to try to restore this iconic species to the forest\, but not without controversy.

SUMMARY:Basics of Timber Basis: Re(setting) the Table
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is the second of five in the “Forestry Taxes: Learn\, Plan & Save Money Webinar Series.” What are the basics of timber basis? Join this webinar to learn more about one of the most important financial aspects of timber management that often goes unnoticed or underappreciated. Timber basis is how much you have invested in the timber and it is used to determine net taxable income. It can be applied to reduce taxable income\, minimize inheritance taxes\, and reduce financial losses after a storm\, and more. \nMany forest landowners pay more taxes on their timber than they should. Accountants can help to calculate taxes\, but forest landowners need to understand how timber expenses should be reported\, and how they are taxed. Saving money on timber taxes starts by keeping good records and knowing how tax rules will affect your bill. The Woodland Stewards Regional Extension Program for Landowners was developed by a collaborative team of forestry Extension professionals from eleven different organizations. This is the fourth year of the series and other webinars from the current and past series can be accessed on the Webinar Portal.

SUMMARY:Timber Management Expenses and Deductions
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is the third of five in the “Forestry Taxes: Learn\, Plan & Save Money Webinar Series.” Managing your timber costs money\, and like any other business\, many of your expenses can be deducted from your tax bill. In this presentation\, you will learn how to assess your forest management costs and correctly claim your deductions. In addition\, presenters will discuss other related topics from how to fill out a “Form T\,” to the ins and outs of reforestation costs\, and conservation easements. \nMany forest landowners pay more taxes on their timber than they should. SUMMARY:Virtual Lunchbox Talk: Naval Stores and the Longleaf Pine Industry in Southeastern NC
DESCRIPTION:In a time before cars\, trains\, and airplanes\, water was often the easiest or the only means of long-distance transportation. Eighteenth-century ships were sailing ships\, and they were made almost entirely of wood.\nNaval stores are goods used in building and maintaining ships. Originally\, ‘naval stores’ included everything used to build a ship meaning tar\, pitch\, and turpentine. All of these products came from pine trees\, and particularly\, the Longleaf pine\, which North Carolina had in abundance. For that reason and others\, North Carolina became a key supplier to the British Navy\, and naval stores became central to the colony’s economy. \n

SUMMARY:Hardwood Diseases
DESCRIPTION:The warm\, humid climate of the southeastern U.S. is well suited for a variety of pathogens that affect hardwood tree species. Diseases like laurel wilt\, thousand cankers disease\, Hypoxylon canker\, oak wilt and others can be difficult to identify and control\, and can lead to significant mortality and ecological impacts. These diseases can cause damage to the roots\, bowls and branches of trees\, and are often transmitted by insect vectors. In this webinar\, Dr. Ellen Crocker will discuss the identification of common hardwood diseases\, damage implications and potential management strategies. \nAdvance registration is not available. \nTo Join: You may join this virtual event 15 to 30 minutes before its scheduled start time by returning to this page. SUMMARY:Bird Watching in the Sandhills
DESCRIPTION:Join a park naturalist at our Sandhills access for an easy bird watching walk around the Wiregrass loop trail. An easy 1.4-mile loop that starts and ends at the parking lot\, the Wiregrass loop trail is a great place to find some of the birds that live year-round in our longleaf pine habitat\, and maybe even see some of the less frequent visitors that are just passing through. We’ll start early to help keep things cool but bring weather appropriate clothes and some water! We will be using the Merlin Bird ID app (free and available in both Android and IOS app stores). If you have binoculars\, be sure to bring them! \nThe hike will start at 8:30 AM and meet at the trail head near the small parking lot. \nThe event and access to the park are both free of charge. \nPlease call our office at 910-436-4681 to sign-up!
