DESCRIPTION:In a time before cars\, trains\, and airplanes\, water was often the easiest or the only means of long-distance transportation. Eighteenth-century ships were sailing ships\, and they were made almost entirely of wood.\nNaval stores are goods used in building and maintaining ships. Originally\, ‘naval stores’ included everything used to build a ship meaning tar\, pitch\, and turpentine. All of these products came from pine trees\, and particularly\, the Longleaf pine\, which North Carolina had in abundance. For that reason and others\, North Carolina became a key supplier to the British Navy\, and naval stores became central to the colony’s economy. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join a park naturalist at our Sandhills access for an easy bird watching walk around the Wiregrass loop trail. An easy 1.4-mile loop that starts and ends at the parking lot\, the Wiregrass loop trail is a great place to find some of the birds that live year-round in our longleaf pine habitat\, and maybe even see some of the less frequent visitors that are just passing through. We’ll start early to help keep things cool but bring weather appropriate clothes and some water! We will be using the Merlin Bird ID app (free and available in both Android and IOS app stores). Even though this animal is probably living near most people\, most do not really know this animal. Through the lens of a trail camera\, Jerry Reynolds will show you the secret life of the Opossum and how amazing they really are. \nJerry Reynolds is Head of Outreach for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. His museum career includes 20 years at Discovery Place Science Museum in Charlotte\, 3 years at Imagination Station Science museum in Wilson and now 19 years in his present position. He has BS and MS degrees in Zoology from North Carolina State University. His masters research was a mark recapture study of the scarlet snake in Carolina Beach State Park\, where he lived for two summers in the park’s campground to conduct his research.

DESCRIPTION:They’re here and more are coming. Invasive threats can impact tree health and degrade forest environments. This webinar will cover the most prevalent invasive threats to North Carolina’s forests and some up and comers to keep watch out for. \nPresenter Kelly Oten is an assistant professor and Extension specialist of forest health at N.C. State University. Although her first love is insects\, she also works on diseases and invasive plants that can impact tree and forest health. She has a B.S. in entomology from Texas A&M\, an M.S. in entomology from the University of Tennessee\, and a Ph.D. in entomology and forestry from N.C. State University. Prior to her role with N.C. State University\, she spent eight years with the N.C. Forest Service Forest Health Branch.

SUMMARY:14th Biennial Longleaf Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Biennial Longleaf Conference\, sponsored by The Longleaf Alliance\, is a regional conference that is focused on the restoration and conservation of the longleaf ecosystem that once dominated the landscape within the southeastern United States. The conference provides the opportunity for people from all over the southeast to get together\, share\, learn\, and celebrate longleaf. It also serves as a rallying spot for several other organizations and government agencies seeking to stage additional events in order to better collaborate on the conference topics. \nThis conference is open to individuals\, private landowners\, land managers\, wildlife biologists\, conservation groups\, consultants\, university researchers\, forestry professionals\, agency and outreach personnel who share an interest in restoration of the longleaf pine ecosystem. On average\, attendance ranges from 250-400 depending on conference location. The conference also draws from 25-35 exhibitors and vendors.
