SUMMARY:Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of Our Future
DESCRIPTION:The world today is undergoing the most rapid environmental transformation in human history—from climate change to deforestation. Scientists\, ethnobotanists\, indigenous peoples\, and collectives of all kinds are closely studying trees and their biology to understand how and why trees function individually and collectively in the ways they do. For his new book\, Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of Our Future\, historian Daniel Lewis went on a global journey to learn about twelve iconic trees in their habitats. In this talk\, Lewis will reveal what he learned of nature and survival through them\, including two trees found in North Carolina—the longleaf pine and bald cypress—and will share insights into the ways in which humans and trees are interconnected. Daniel Lewis is the Dibner Senior Curator for the History of Science and Technology at the Huntington Library\, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in Southern California and a writer\, college professor and environmental historian. His book “Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of Our Future” was published by Simon and Schuster in March 2024.

SUMMARY:Future Directions for Hurricane Disturbed Forests Corner Down Image
DESCRIPTION:Join Experts from silviculture\, forest economics\, forest management and operations\, and geospatial disciples in a panel discussion on the potential opportunities and challenges for research and outreach related to hurricane disturbed forest. The panel will outline the needs and collaborations necessary for advancing current research and explore unknown and underappreciated issues related to the topic. The audience is also invited to ask questions to our panel and provide insight into the conversation. \nThis webinar is the second of two webinars. The first webinar\, Current Research in Hurricane Disturbed Forests\, shared results from recent research exploring dynamics of hurricane impacted forests. SUMMARY:Managing the Right Species on the Right Site: Part 2 - Species Selection
DESCRIPTION:To meet landowners’ interests and objectives\, new strategies are needed to either naturally or artificially regenerate commercially valuable timber. Picking the right management strategy before a harvest can save you money and provide an optimal future income for you and your heirs. This webinar will highlight examples in North Carolina from the coastal plain to the mountains\, focused on commonly managed commercial species. The presenter will summarize the primary ways that different timber types in North Carolina are regenerated following a harvest. This webinar is part 2 of a 2-part series. \nPre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Webinar: White-Nose Syndrome and Bats
DESCRIPTION:White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) is a devastating disease that affects hibernating bats\, caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd). This fungus thrives in cold\, dark\, and damp environments\, attacking the bare skin of bats during their hibernation. As it grows\, it disrupts their hibernation patterns\, causing them to burn through the fat reserves needed to survive the winter. The result is often fatal\, with millions of bats in North America already lost to this disease. WNS is especially concerning because bats play a critical role in ecosystems\, particularly in controlling insect populations. Additionally\, people can unknowingly spread the Pd fungus when they move from one location to another without properly cleaning their gear. This makes it crucial to clean and disinfect shoes\, clothing\, and equipment between trips to help prevent the spread of WNS. In this webinar\, we’ll explore the impact of White-Nose Syndrome and learn more about the efforts of the White-Nose Syndrome Response Team to combat this deadly disease.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Wooly Adelgid Treatment Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. Hemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nThis hands-off demonstration will be useful for landowners\, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options\, and staff will demonstrate the HWA chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands. These methods are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety\, special considerations and guidance for hiring a tree care professional. \nThe program is free to the North Carolina Arboretum members\, but nonmembers will need to pay a $20 entrance fee. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Managing the Right Species on the Right Site: Part 1 - Site Selection
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will review the influence of site characteristics on species composition. Understanding which trees grow best in each area on the property is the first step in deciding how to harvest and regenerate a forest. This webinar will highlight examples from North Carolina from the coastal plain to the mountains\, focused on commonly managed commercial species. The presenter will identify sites that work across the state for managing different species for forestry use. \nSince North Carolina markets have changed and landowners’ interests and objectives change over time\, a careful look into sites that work for particular timber species is needed. This webinar is for landowners interested in either doing site restoration or reforestation work and for professionals that work with forest systems. This webinar is Part 1 of a 2-part series. Part 2 of the series is October 17\, 2024\, at noon Eastern.\n\nContinuing Education Credit:\nSociety of American Foresters – Certified Forester Education (SAF-CFE) – 1-hour Category 1 Credit [Applied For]\nThe Wildlife Society – Certified Wildlife Biologist®/Professional Development Certificate Program – 1 hour TWS Category 1 Credit   [credits applied for] \nRegister HERE

The second webinar is scheduled for October 21\, 2024\, at noon Eastern

SUMMARY:International Oak Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The University of Tennessee’s School of Natural Resources is proud to host an International Oak Symposium in 2024 to provide a platform to exchange information and build collaborations around the best available science and technology on oak ecology and management for a global audience. Field trip(s) will be offered that showcase multi-disciplinary research of the USDA Forest Service and other partners. \nThe overall goal of this symposium is to cultivate and promote synergy among natural resource managers and researchers working towards practical applications to sustain or restore oak ecosystems around the world. The symposium will address the most current issues and complexities related to science-based management of oak species and forests at global\, regional\, and local scales. The four-day program seeks to engage a diverse audience of managers and scientists in a forum that fosters innovation in silviculture and management for sustainability of oak forests. \nOur specific objectives are to provide platforms\, products\, and opportunities for: \n\ntechnology transfer and dialogue between researchers and managers\nscientific exchanges among researchers\nfostering collaborations between managers and researchers\nproduction of peer-reviewed research papers\nContribute towards professional development of students and early-career scientists\n\n

SUMMARY:Coastal Forests as Sentinels of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise
DESCRIPTION:Along the southeastern U.S. coast\, it is becoming more and more common to see large patches of dead or dying trees where healthy forests used to be. These areas are called ghost forests\, and they have been recorded since at least the 1920’s. Ghost forests can be found on the Atlantic coast from New Jersey to Texas and as climate change persists\, ghost forests are expected to become a more prevalent sight. But what causes this mass death of once healthy forests? What are the ecosystem impacts and can anything be done to save the trees? In this webinar\, Dr. Marcelo Ardón of N.C. State University will answer all these questions and more as he explains ghost forests and what causes them.
