SUMMARY:Forest Management From a Landowner’s Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Foresters often talk with landowners about the value of working with a professional in managing their land\, but professionals frequently do not get candid feedback from their clients. What is the experience of taking care of a property and working with a forester\, from the owner’s perspective? \nLandowners Bet and Patrick Smith of rural northeastern Connecticut will share how they came to own and steward their woodland and will discuss their experiences and lessons learned from working with different private and public foresters. We will also be joined by Connecticut NRCS District Conservationist Bill Purcell\, who has worked with the Smiths and many other landowners and is familiar with common issues that can arise. \nThis webinar presents an opportunity to hear from fellow landowners about ways to work effectively in partnership with foresters and allied professionals. \nThis event is free. Register here. \n

SUMMARY:ForestHer NC: Identifying Birds by Sight & Sound
DESCRIPTION:Join ForestHER NC landowners\, natural resource professionals\, and others for the first of four interactive webinars about managing for wildlife! This first installment will feature a quick background on the ForestHer NC program followed by a presentation on bird identification from Aimee Tomcho\, Conservation Biologist with Audubon North Carolina. There will be time for questions\, as well as an optional\, informal time to have more in-depth discussions about birds and other land management topics following the webinar. \nRegistration is free. Register here. \nIf you need assistance with online registration contact Laurel Kays at lekays@ncsu.edu or 919-513-2573.

SUMMARY:Growing-Season Prescribed Fires & Ground-Nesting Birds
DESCRIPTION:Millions of dollars have been spent over the past 20 years on reforestation of longleaf pine forests. Restoration will take time coupled with frequent and repeated application of prescribed burning. Burning is absolutely critical to restoration\, but an appreciable number of individuals and groups now limit their opportunities to burn to a smaller and smaller burn window. The concern often voiced is that burning from April – July is detrimental to ground nesting/grassland birds and should be avoided. Restoration targets that require frequent burning and may not be achieved if the burn window becomes too narrow. This presentation will look at the science behind the use of fire during the “lightning season” (the months of April – July) and its effects on ground-nesting birds such as quail and Bachman’s sparrow.  Following the presentations there will be time for audience Q/A with the speaker. \nThere is no cost for this event. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Pine Straw Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Pine straw is extremely popular as a mulch in the southeastern United States\, and because of this pine straw harvesting is a strong industry in the region. Longleaf pine straw is the most desirable of the southern pines\nbecause of its long and durable needles\, but slash and loblolly pine straw can also be used. \nRaking pine straw can be an attractive and valuable source of income for forest landowners\, providing an opportunity to cover some of the costs associated with establishment and maintenance associated with longleaf\npine ecosystems. Commercial operators bale pine straw and sell it to contractors and garden centers who\, in turn\, sell it to homeowners. \nThe purpose of this webinar is to help landowners and resource managers balance harvesting operations while preserving desired wildlife benefits and stand health. While pine straw is valuable to homeowners as a mulch\, pine\nneedles are also valuable to the forest\, serving critical ecological functions\, including helping to carry prescribed fires as a fine fuel\, protecting soil and water resources\, and recycling nutrients. \nThis webinar will take place on a series of 4 Wednesdays – September 16\, 23\, 30 and October 7. \nCost is $10 general admission and $45 for foresters who need CFEs. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Woodland Owner Lunch and Learn - Seedling Genetics and Soil Fertility and how to care for it
DESCRIPTION:During each rotation of a planted forest\, landowners have a single opportunity to choose the appropriate genetics for their long-term investment. We encourage forest landowners to plant the best genetic quality seedlings possible. The benefits from establishing highly productive families\, in combination with good silvicultural practices\, will result in large financial returns. Nurseries grow loblolly pine seedlings that have a range in genetic quality. Information about the value of different seedling families can be sourced from seedling vendors as well as from tree improvement cooperatives. The cooperative provides a “third-party” assessment of the productivity\, disease resistance\, and stem quality of the many families that are available for purchase. Once decisions on seedling genetics are made\, at-planting silvicultural decisions will determine the trajectory of the stand and if landowners will capture the potential of selected genetics. Appropriate chemical and/or mechanical site preparation\, fertilization\, timing\, and spacing & density all play critical roles in ensuring the success of a new plantation. \n  \nThere is no cost to attend this webinar. You do not need to pre-register. Space is NOT limited. Please plan to join the Webinar 15 to 30 minutes early so that you can successfully join the presentation interface. \nJoin the webinar here. \nIf you have not participated in one of our Zoom hosted webinars before\, please read these instructions to find out how to setup\, test and use Zoom on your computer.

SUMMARY:Heirs Property: Standing on a Lot of Love\, Part II. A Deeper Look at Strategies for Heirs Property Owners
DESCRIPTION:In this follow up to Heirs Property: Standing on a Lot of Love webinar\, we will take a look at one family’s journey with their heirs property to get much needed forestry and legal services for their land. Based on a fictional case study\, this webinar will give participants a deeper understanding of the issues involved with heirs property such as owner conflicts and requirements to access services from government agencies and third parties. \nAfter the presentation of the case study\, participants will be able to ask questions. Plus\, if you have any heirs property questions in advance that you would like us to consider discussing\, please enter them here. The presenters will select a few questions submitted by registrants to discuss. \nThere is no cost to attend this webinar.
