What Is Certification?

Forest certification recognizes woodlands that are managed to defined Standards of Sustainability that ensure the many benefits and functions of the forest are protected during management and harvests. These benefits include wildlife habitat, clean water, soils and recreational use. The goal of forest certification is to promote management practices that are environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. A forest qualifies for certification through an independent third-party assessment of the management plan and practices.
